A partnership between WFRW, Breakfast Club and Culture Mile Imagine
Between October and December 2020, my quartet Breakfast Club collaborated with a group of female participants from Women for Refugee Women (WRW) to explore the concept of identity and change, drawing inspiration from the poems Metamorphoses by the Canadian astronomer-writer Rebecca Elson (1960 - 1999) and NOW by the American writer, feminist and civil rights activist Audre Lorde (1934-1992).
Inspired by sharing our stories and experiences of change, transformation and becoming, as well as Elson’s female astronomer whose mind “holds itself beyond the universe that it beholds”, this Culture Mile Imagine Commission explored individual and collective narratives of change, while voicing the struggles and strengths of each one of us.
Working with poetry, drawing, improvisation, singing, group composition, video and photography, Breakfast Club and WRW collaborated with the group participants on five original music compositions.
Alongside this process, drama and performance facilitator Rebecca Hayes Laughton and video editor Deryn Ellis have also responded to the written and visual material that the women have been contributing with throughout.
